Hi✌️,
And welcome back to this weeks edition of INFUZED on People.
This is one on hiring people is quick, because your time is also limited when interviewing people.
It’s essential to hiring well that you can gauge the person you’re interviewing as precisely as possible in that limited time you have with them. So choose wisely what you ask them.
Here is
"The Single Best Interview Question"
„What important truth do very few people agree with you on?“
This is the question Peter Thiel likes to ask when interviewing as he describes in his book „Zero to One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future“.
Here is why, in his words:
„This question sounds easy because it’s straightforward. Actually, it’s very hard to answer. It’s intellectually difficult because the knowledge that everyone is taught in school is by definition agreed upon. And it’s psychologically difficult because anyone trying to answer must say something she knows to be unpopular. Brilliant thinking is rare, but courage is in even shorter supply than genius.“
Traps to be cautious of when asking this question:
- Trap #1: They say something a lot people would agree with.
- Trap #2: They take the „minority side“ of a popular debate.
- Trap #3: They say something you agree with and you both tap into trap #1 or #2.
There is an excellent article on FS (Farnam Street) on this question, which goes a little further into scrutinizing answers and how answers relate to building the future. |
